Sparta Systems delivered a £1,020,000 drylining and ceilings package for Sir Robert McAlpine at one of Leeds City Centres most iconic buildings, the Majestic.

Majestic, located in the centre of Leeds, is a landmark grade II listed building which originally opened in 1922 as a cinema and ballroom. After serving as a bingo hall, nightclub and suffering from a fire in 2014, the building was redeveloped into a high-grade office building; the new head office for Channel 4 television.

Our works included drylining, ceilings and riser doors. The scheme featured soaring circular atriums, curved façades and drylined helical staircases; some of the most technically challenging drylining work we have undertaken. Working within a listed building added another layer of complexity, with new systems needing to tie in cleanly with retained heritage features.

Partway through the job, COVID-19 shutdowns caused disruption across the industry. Despite the challenges this brought, the team adapted quickly and continued to deliver the works to a high standard, completing the package within the revised programme.

The project ran from November 2019 to August 2020 with a peak of 26 operatives on site, led by Dave Metcalfe.
