SPARTA / OUR PEOPLE

We have 10+ years of experience

The Sparta team have played key roles in delivering subcontract packages on numerous projects including hospitals, schools, MOD buildings, student accommodation, health centres, retail spaces and apartments. These packages include SFS, partitions, dry lining, suspended ceilings, acoustic panels and fire stopping. We have been established since 2011, but still consider ourselves a young and dynamic company. We work hard to provide a reliable and honest service from the point of enquiry through to the delivery of the project. This has served us well and helped us tailor our strategy around repeat business with key supply chain partners.

We Are Committed to Delivering Quality

We have 10+ years of experience supplying and installing SFS, partitions & ceilings through repeat business with main contractors. We’re on our way to securing our 100th project since the company launched, encompassing almost 20 schools, as well as hospitals, hotels, leisure centres, university buildings, and retail settings. You can see the contribution of Sparta Systems all over the north of England and beyond.

We have won a variety of awards from main contractors pertaining to both safety and quality, and our specific work at UTC Leeds with BAM helped us reach the finals of the Saint-Gobain Gypsum Trophy in Lisbon.

Notable projects and brands that we have been involved with or worked on are:

A strong emphasis is placed on fostering a culture of openness and integrity; accountability is key to our success. We focus on the mental health of our employees, both in terms of monitoring the wellbeing of our team and offering targeted support when needed. We have a proven track record of putting in place interventions and following up on issues, ensuring everyone at Sparta knows they are a valuable member of the team.

Promotion from within is another important part of Sparta Systems, enabling us to maintain the continuity that we value so highly, as well as rewarding our hard-working and talented team members.

The power of good communication is understood and is made a cornerstone of every project. Our team is committed to maintaining clear, consistent, and transparent communication throughout the process, ensuring that everyone is aligned and informed every step of the way. Working Together to Bring Your Vision to Life

At Sparta, we have consistently high levels of staff retention, which we see as both a reflection of and a reason for our stability as a company. This also makes us easy to deal with, both for main contractors and subcontractors; the same team will oversee your whole project, ensuring quality control.

Our team is experienced, having overseen and worked on hundreds of projects both for Sparta and in previous roles. We have a strong sense of the importance of teamwork, nurtured through proactive communication and a culture of collective responsibility. Crucially, we are proud to be one of the nicest groups of people you could hope to work with. We take pleasure in the feedback we consistently receive backing up the idea that Sparta as a group is supportive, kind, hardworking, collaborative and motivated.

Meet The Team

Our team is the heart of everything we do. Each member brings a unique set of skills, experience, and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional results. From our contractors to our project managers, site managers, and commercial managers – there’s a group of passionate individuals behind every project we deliver

  • Mat

Mathew has worked in the fields of SFS, Partitions and Ceilings since leaving school. When he grows up he would very much like to be Marty McFly!

    Mathew Bates
    Commercial Director
  • Simon

Simon has worked in all aspects of construction since the age of 16 and relishes the ever-changing demands of the industry. If you have ever seen his driving, you would be right to guess that his favourite film is The Italian Job (1969).

    Simon Jones
    Project Director
  • Dave F

Dave joined (well started) the Sparta Project Management team from a plastering background and has technically worked at Sparta longer than anyone else. He sees himself as a Steve McQueen-esque figure.

    Dave Fordham
    Contracts Manager
  • andy

Andy has been getting angry at shoddy tender enquiries since the turn of the millennium. He sees himself as a Troy Bolton type character due to his unerring joie de vivre and musical talent.

    Andy Carr
    Procurement Manager
  • Nat

Natalie joined Sparta from a commercial background in the retail industry and is enjoying the varied challenges that construction brings – please check back at a later date for a film fact (once she has actually watched a film).

    Natalie McDermott
    Business Manager
  • andrei

When Andrei isn’t knocking up one of his world-famous tiramisus or being father & husband of the year, he is busy keeping the good ship Sparta on a steady course. Nothing seems to phase him and probably explains why his favourite film is Cool Hand Luke!

    Andrei Bagrin
    Site Manager
  • Michael B

Mike has been looking after construction pennies since 2005 and has worked on many a prestigious project for main contractors, and he turned to the dark side of subcontracting in 2018. He once represented his country at the European Indoor Trampolining Finals and would have taken gold if it weren’t for a rusty spring!

    Michael Boyes
    Commercial Manager
  • Shaun

Shaun has been a Project Manager since the beginning of time, prior to this he served his time as a Joiner. If he were a film character he thinks he would definitely be Katniss Everdeen.

    Shaun Bates
    QA Manager
  • Dave M

Dave has worked at Sparta since 2016 and earned his stripes the old fashioned way as a partition fixer. He tries to keep it quiet but he actually discovered gypsum, and was a key player in the development of what we today call a plasterboard!

    Dave Metcalfe
    Project Manager
  • Before selling his soul to join management John served his time as a Dryliner. However you have to delve much deeper to uncover his more niche skills. in addition to being an accomplished marksman, Sparta let John go on sabbatical now and then as he is often called up for Stunt driver duties. You may have seen his name credited in such classics as “The Fast and the Furious”, “Fast Five” and “Furious 7” to name but a few.

    John Rowley
    Project Manager
  • Martin D

Martin comes from a strong ceilings and plastering background. Those that already know him will know that not only is he a keen kayak enthusiast and also very well read into Russian history but he also competed at a high level of Crown Green Bowling (European Champs), unfortunately missing out on making a career from it due to a knee injury.

    Martin Dalby
    Project Manager
  • mark

Playful and loving, requiring minimal grooming and exercise! That is a typical description of the French Bulldog – Mark has two of these and it’s fair to say they are his favourite of all the animals on the planet. Luckily for Sparta, people come a very close second and you will struggle to find anyone passing through the Sparta doors in the last few years that won’t have noticed the care and attention that Mark puts into people. This seems too straight of a description so fun fact – he sleeps in a waistcoat!

    Mark Hainsworth
    Site Manager
  • david wilkinson

Dave joins our management team with experience in site management and plastering but it’s his nickname that gives us the most interesting of facts! He is known to all as Blue, which actually comes from the six-month period that he spent as one of the understudies to the “Blue Man Group” in the early 90s. Although he didn’t get to perform in front of the Broadway crowds, his mime work is still incredible!

    David Wilkinson (AKA Blue)
    Site Manager
  • Debra

Debra is a self-confessed cinephile, and although it might not be obvious from her general happy-go-luck demeanour, her favourite genre is horror and she has a very special love for the Saw films. Although give her an opportunity for fancy dress and time after time it will naturally be Pennywise that she opts for!

    Debra Bates
    Office Administrator
  • Josh

We are very lucky to have this multifaceted individual as part of the Sparta team. Not only is Josh starting his own Golf YouTube channel, but he also harvests and roasts his own brand of coffee bean. In the very little free time he has, Josh also gives time to charity, and although some wouldn’t call it charity, anyone investing time in Man Utd isn’t getting anything back for that investment.

    Josh Metcalfe
    Business Support Manager
  • Sam

Very prominent on the karting circuit when he was younger, Sam will happily chew your ear off about the time he beat Oscar Piastri (currently of the McLaren Formula 1 team) to a podium place around a slippery European circuit!

    Sam Leake
    QA Manager
  • evie

We should delve into the fact that Evie is a massive Disney fan and talk about how she dreams of one day living in the forest with seven really short old men, each one with their own over-riding personality trait. Side fact: Harry Styles has a tattoo of Evie’s signature from a chance face to face at one of his concerts.
